Obituary of Meredith A. "Mert" Scruggs

Meredith A “Mert” Scruggs, age 88 of Lafayette, passed away Saturday, January 20, 2018.  Funeral Service will be Monday, January 22nd at 2:00 p.m. from the chapel of Alexander Family Heritage Funeral Home (100 Albert Gallatin Avenue), with Bro. Maxie Brawner officiating.  Visitation will be Sunday, January 21st from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Monday, January 22nd from 12:00 p.m. until time of service at 2:00 p.m.  Interment will follow the service at Crestview Memory Gardens, with Gene Scruggs, Pat Scruggs, Jimmy Hunter, Casey Scruggs, Bruce Perry, and Dustin Cannon serving as pallbearers.

Mr. Scruggs was born May 26, 1929 in Gallatin to the late Elmer T. Scruggs and Eller Young Scruggs.  In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife, Autumn “Penny” Bough Scruggs; brothers, Everett Scruggs, Jesse Scruggs, and (infant brother), Gerald Scruggs; sisters, Hazel Scruggs and Gertrude Rodriguez; and nephews, James David Scruggs, Jerry Ray Scruggs, and Ricky Harlan Scruggs.  He is survived by wife of 20 years, Mary Parsley Scruggs of Lafayette; sister, Virginia McCaffrey of Aburn, CA; nephews, Gene Scruggs (Michelle) of Gallatin and Patrick A. Scruggs of Gallatin; nieces, Rosemary S. Hunter (Jimmy) of Gallatin, Camilla Perry (Bruce) of Portland, Loretta Wilson (Jeff) of Portland, and Diane Rodriguez Gerrity (Dennis) of California; and stepchildren, Wanda Beck (Bob) of Indiana, Danny Proffitt of Indiana, and Sandy Perdue (Troy) of Lafayette.  Mr. Scurggs was a member of Brattentown Missionary Baptist Church.  Mr. Scruggs served our country in the United States Army during the Korean War.  He retired from TVA after 10 years of service.  Online condolences may be submitted at alexanderheritagefh.com.  Alexander Family Heritage Funeral Home has been honored with arrangements.
