Obituary of Theta Campbell

Theta Campbell, age 89 of Bethpage, passed away Saturday, October 2, 2021. Funeral Service will be Tuesday, October 5th at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church Gallatin, with Dr. Travis Fleming officiating. Visitation will be Monday, October 4th from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Family Heritage Funeral Home and Tuesday, October 5th at the church from 1:00 p.m. until time of service at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow the service at Bethpage Upper Cemetery, with family and friends serving as pallbearers. Masks are recommended. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First Baptist Church Gallatin Mission’s Fund, P.O. Box 369, Gallatin, TN 37066. Mrs. Campbell was born on April 10, 1932, to Lee and Nellie Collins Overton in Bethpage, TN. She was born again, as a new believer in Christ, at age 12 at Bledsoe Creek Baptist Church and was baptized in the Bledsoe Creek. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by sister, Elizabeth Moss and brother John W. Overton. She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Wert Campbell, Jr; daughters, Katrina (Marcus) Marler of Gallatin, Gina (late Jan Willis of Portland) Willis of Waynesville, NC, John (Terri) Campbell of Chesapeake, OH, and Nellie Campbell of Nashville, TN; sisters, Lela Jay of Portland, Virginia Law of Bethpage, Rowena (T.J.) Griffy of Hendersonville, Martha Bolton of Gallatin; and brother, James “Chigger” Overton of Westmoreland. She graduated from GHS where she played on the girls’ basketball team. While continuing her education at Carson-Newman college, she met her future husband, Wert Campbell from Chattanooga, TN. The next year TN Baptists purchased Ward-Belmont and Theta transferred to the newly formed junior college, Belmont College, and was in the first graduating class in the spring of 1952, earning her Associates Degree. On August 23, 1952, she and Wert were married in front of the overflowing water fountain on the Belmont College campus. She and Wert were married for 69 wonderful years. Theta knew God had forgiven her of her sins and entered her life at age 12. She once wrote, “He (God) has been with me daily from then on, helping me raise our four children, who are all Chrsitians. He was with me on mission trips (to Venezuela, Chile, Montana, Canada and as a voluntary Missionary to Germany for two and a half years). God also used me to lead Sunday School conferences and Witness Training Clinics all over the country. One of my greatest joys was teaching three year olds in Sunday School for 22 years. God has not only led me in the mission and teaching opportunities He has provided, but He has also been the guiding force in our 69 years of marriage. I could not imagine life without Christ.” She deeply loved her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, but most of all her Lord and Savior.
