Ever since James called with the sad news of my Aunt Patsy’s passing, I’ve been thinking about the influence Aunt Patsy had in my life, and about all of the ways that I will miss her. Here are just a few of the things that I will always remember (and miss) about her:
1. Aunt Patsy always seemed to be full of life and ready to enjoy the moment, whether it was big or small, eagerly awaited or unexpected. My memories of her will remind me to focus on the good in life; to recognize all of the many ways that life can surprise us with good things; and to be ready to enjoy these good things when they come along.
2. Aunt Patsy also had more energy than almost anyone I know. From playing tennis and dancing in ballroom competitions to all of her travels and outings with grandchildren, she was always completely engaged. She committed fully to each of these activities and more, always giving everything her all. One of my fondest memories is playing tennis with her, James, and my husband, Jim. Even though she was in her 80s, Aunt Patsy schooled us all! Sadly, I cannot hope for this level of energy, but it is one of the things I will always remember and cherish about her.
3. Perhaps most importantly, the way Aunt Patsy lived her life was a shining example of how to love and care for family, to be a good friend, to help and support others in the community, and to live a good life. I never heard her say an unkind word about anyone, which is really remarkable.
During the COVID era, Aunt Patsy, my dad who is her brother, and I teleconferenced about once a month. I feel lucky to have had these conversations with Aunt Patsy, and I have to concede that COVID did bring some good things. I will always cherish these conversations, and I will really miss them.
All of these memories comfort me during this time of grief. I hope that memories of this remarkable woman will bring comfort to her family and friends as well.
