Obituary of Rosamary Helen Young

Mrs. Rosamary Young, age 90 of Portland, Tennessee passed away on Monday, February 21, 2022 at her residence. Rosamary was born a Native American Potawatomi and raised on Native American lands in Oklahoma. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic School for girls and Chioccoan Indian School. Her family moved to Tonkawa, OK where her two sisters and five brothers were born. After completing school, Rosamary worked at the local telephone office as a switchboard operator. On November 26, 1951, at age 21 she married Delmar Leroy Young from nearby Blackwell, OK. Delmar loved and treasured her immensely and they were married for 66 years until his death. During their marriage, they lived in Oklahoma, Kansas, New Mexico, Colorado, Washington, Minnesota, New York, and Illinois, all while growing their family to include four children. Eventually, they ended up in the North Dallas area of Texas where they would live the longest. Their final move was in 2008 when they moved to Portland, Tennessee to be near their youngest daughter and her family. They both accepted Christ as their personal savior in 1961. Their relationship with God, and teaching their children and grandchildren about God, was their priority throughout their lives. In every place they lived, they strengthened the local church, started new churches, and helped minister to families in the neighborhoods around them. Rosamary taught Sunday School, and many girls' Bible study groups, often hosting parties and sleepovers at her house. She loved to laugh, play silly games and make lots and lots of crafts, and the girls loved being with her. She never stopped building the Kingdom of God and teaching His truths to her children, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren. Her family loved hearing the stories of how God worked in her life as she lived for His glory. We are all certain of her joy, now complete, as she worships our Father in Heaven. Rosamary is preceded in death by her parents, Mary Margret DeLonais, Albert H. “Jack” Higdon, and Isaac Pete Wano (step-father). Her husband Delmar Leroy Young, one daughter Dell Rosa (Young) Chalk, a son-in-law James Donald Cook and a grandson Jeremy Shaun Young. She is survived by son-in-law Bradford Chalk, son Ray Young (wife Teresa), son Bert Young (wife Jackie), and daughter Lyn (Young) Cook, as well as ten grandchildren and twenty-four great-grandchildren.
