Obituary of George Smith

George Smith, 88, died on December 13, 2010 at his home in Lebanon, Tennessee. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he served his country during WWII as a member of the 446th Bomb Group, Squadron 705. He was on a B-24 Liberator as a right waist gunner when he was shot down over Germany on April 11, 1944, on his 24th mission. He was captured and held Prisoner in Stalag 17B for 13 months. After the war he joined the Nassau County Police Department where he served as a Patrolman and Sergeant. After 18 years and 6 months of service he retired on February 6, 1972. He has been a life member of AX-POW since 1980. Survivors include: wife of 64 years, Lillian, children Robert (Sharon), Eric (Janis), and Karen Smith, 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson.
