Obituary of Herman Edward Hamlett

Ed Hamlett passed away on December 8, 2010 at age 80. The family will be accepting friends at Sellars Funeral Home in Lebanon from 2-8 p.m. on Friday, December 10, 2010. The church service is 11 a.m. Saturday, December 11, 2010 at Hillcrest Baptist Church, conducted by Brother Glenn Denton, in Lebanon. Interment in Wilson County Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers: Family and friends. Honorary Pallbearers: Smith County High School Class of 1949, and former teachers, staff, and students of Oakland, Major, West, Tuckers Crossroads, and Southside Schools, Hardees Buddies (Gus Bates, Charles Adams, and James Neely), and Golden Agers Bowling League. Mr. Hamlett served in the United States Air Force from 1950-1954. He served as Principal and teacher for 29 years in the Wilson County School System: Oakland, Major, West Elementary, Southside, and Tuckers Crossroads. He served as a junior pro basketball coach in West Wilson County for ten years. He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, Gideons International, and American Legion. He was a beloved teacher and literally influenced hundreds of young people. He always wanted the best for every student. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hillcrest Baptist Church or Gideons International. Survivors include wife of 42 years Jane Eastes Hamlett; brother: Bobby Kenneth Hamlett of Ocean City MD; 3 nieces: Laura McBride of Winder GA, Amy Stapler of Dawsonville GA, and Sherri Ovbey of Ila GA; and 4 nephews: Randy Hamlett of Ocean City MD, Bruce Hamlett and Danny Hamlett of Berlin MD, and Todd Hamlett of Towson MD. He is preceded in death by parents Herman Carlos and Cletis Stout Hamlett, sister Kay Gann, and niece Barbara Horn.
