Obituary of James Campbell Bradshaw

James Campbell Bradshaw, Jr., M.D., 81, of Lebanon, Tennessee and Naples, Florida, died Monday February 18, 2013, following a dinner with his wife and close friends. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Martha Mann Bradshaw and four children James C. Bradshaw III (Sally); Julia Bradshaw Johnson (Robert); John H. Bradshaw (Karen); and Jay M. Bradshaw (Joey); 11 grandchildren James C. Bradshaw IV, Claire Evans Johnson, Elizabeth Jane Bradshaw, John High Bradshaw, Jr., Caroline Elizabeth Johnson, Lucy Milburn Bradshaw, Ross Mann Bradshaw, Joseph Werner Bradshaw, Sarah Bradshaw Johnson, Lillian Elizabeth Bradshaw, Fisher Campbell Bradshaw. He is also survived by his sister, Ann Bradshaw Sitton. He was preceded in death by his parents James C. Bradshaw and Sarah High Bradshaw; two brothers, Judge Robert Bradshaw and John Bobo Bradshaw. Born in the Tuckers Crossroads Community in Wilson County, Dr. Bradshaw grew up in Hartsville, Tennessee and attended Trousdale County High School and Castle Heights Military Academy. After graduating from CHMA, Dr. Bradshaw attended The University of the South at Sewanee before entering the United States Navy to serve his country during the Korean War. After a four year stint in the Navy, Dr. Bradshaw returned to Tennessee to complete his education, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville and graduating from the University of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis. Dr. Bradshaw began his medical practice in Lebanon at McFarland Hospital in 1961. He was on staff at McFarland until 1988 and served as Chief of the Medical Staff from 1963 to 1977. He joined the medical staff at University Medical Center in 1988. He was Chief of the Medical Staff at UMC for two years from 1990 to 1992 and served on the hospital's governing board from 1990 to 1998. He also served as the school physician for his alma mater Castle Heights Military Academy from 1968 until the school closed in 1986. Dr. Bradshaw served on the Board of the Tennessee Medical Association, was a past chairman of that organization, and was active in helping the TMA and national medical organizations promote certain legislative issues on both state and federal levels. During the course of his medical practice in Lebanon, Dr. Bradshaw earned a reputation as a dedicated family physician, delivering thousands of babies and serving as primary care physician for thousands of patients from all across Middle Tennessee but primarily from Wilson, Trousdale, Macon, Smith, Clay and Jackson counties. Dr. Bradshaw was known and loved for his gentle bedside manner, friendly disposition and true concern for others. Dr. Bradshaw was a founding member of Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, Inc. in 1969 and served for more than 33 years on its Board of Directors. He was a member of the Lebanon Afternoon Rotary, the First United Methodist Church, and was active in a number of local community and nonprofit organizations. He was also an Organizer and Founder of First Freedom Bank in Lebanon. An active athlete and runner, Dr. Bradshaw was an avid golfer and tennis player. He was fan of high school and college football, basketball and baseball. He spent the last several years in Lebanon and Naples enjoying the company of his loving wife, children, grandchildren and many close friends. The family will receive friends Friday, Feb. 22 between the hours of 1-7 p.m. at Lebanon's First United Methodist Church and again on Saturday from 9 until the 11 a.m. funeral at the church. His eleven grandchildren will serve as active pallbearers. Sellars Funeral Home, Lebanon is in charge of arrangements.
