A recent Letter of Memories sent to Aunt Betty....
Betty…
I wish I could be there to see you and hopefully try to make you laugh. I am so thankful that you were able to make the trip to California last year to spend a week with me. I really enjoyed showing you where I live, having you visit some of my favorite places and meet Skyler my "dog daughter". Skyler absolutely loved you and that you would play chase with her.
Since I'm not there to reminisce with you, I thought I would share in a letter some of my favorite memories hanging out with you while growing up. I'm not sure how often you would keep us as kids but it feels like when I was little I saw you every week. For someone that never had children of her own, you absolutely raised a bunch of kids because I know I always thought of you as a second mom and I feel certain that Mike, Traci, Kathy and Christina feel the same way.
As you know I was always a "girlie girl" and loved dresses. I know we did not have a lot of money when I was little and that is probably why every year at Easter you would take us to Kiddie Smart Shop to pick out Easter Dresses. That was one of my favorite times of the year, I always picked a frilly dress with a bow (I know you hated to try and tie them and would typically send us to Grandma to tie the bows). I felt like a princess in those special dresses and remember twirling in front of the mirrors at the store. It was such a special shopping trip with you every year. I am still a "girlie girl" and love wearing dresses today!
Sometimes after we picked out dresses we would go to a Shoe Store on the square. I don't remember the name of the store but I do remember they gave out toys or an egg with surprise inside or something depending on the brand of shoe you picked. My guess is I probably always picked that brand. ?
I remember Kathy and I arguing over who got to sit in the car upfront with you when we went places. Kathy always liked to sing in the car and you would sing with her sometimes but then she would tell you to not sing and just listen to her. (she did that to me too, but I never could really carry a tune)
Kathy was always good at entertaining us. I thought you, Mom and Grandma were going to pee your pants from laughing so hard at Great Grandma over that "Coo Coo Clock" when she thought it was broken and wouldn't stop "Coo Cooing" as Kathy followed her down the hall yelling Coo Coo.
I also remember you buying us an ICEE all the time, which was such a special treat for us. I loved the red ones. I am told when I was very little you and Mom took me to get my picture made but I wouldn't and kept crying. I guess you tried to bribe me with an ICEE but I unfortunately never took the pictures and thanks to you - I guess I still got that ICEE.
These are just a handful of small memories from growing up with you, there are just so many given all the nights we spent the night with you, summers with Vacation Bible School, and trips to Cedar Forest. I just wanted you to know that you made a big and positive impact on my childhood and you are so very special to me. If there really are Angels that walk among us…..you are definitely one of those Angels! You are such a "giver" always looking for ways to help others and you always see the glass half full! I feel so blessed to have you as my Aunt and I love you more than words could ever say! I wish I could be there to see you in person!
All my love….
Karen
