Obituary of Spurling James Henry

Jim Spurling, age 79, passed away on June 22, 2009 at home. Mr. Spurlock was a member of the Touchstone Church of Christ. He retired from the US Army as a Master Sergeant E-8, and retired from the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. Mr. Spurlock was a founding member of the National Guard Marksmen Training Unit, a member of the National Guard Retired Shooters Association, and the National Rifle Association. Honors: The National Rifles Championship Presidents 100 winner, the Distigushed Rifleman's Badge, and the Tennessee Governor's Top 20 Shooters. Mr. Spurlock's military career started in Rockwood TN and included assignments in many areas of the world including the Korean Conflict in Iceland and Desert Storm. The family will be receiving friends at Sellars Funeral Home in Lebanon on Wednesday, June 24, 2009 from 5-9 p.m. and on Thursday from 4 p.m. until service. The chapel service, conducted by Brother Tom Tignor, is 6 p.m. Thursday, June 25, 2009. Interment with full military honors in Cedar Grove Cemetery will immediately follow the service. Pallbearers: Artie Gibbs, Dwight Jewell, Joe Smith, Gene Barnette, and Bill Durham. Honorary Pallbearers: Sandra Bass and Terri Quinn and the staff of Odyssey Hospice, the National Guard Retired Shooters Association members, and retired members of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. Survivors include wife of 52 years, Irene Kindrick Spurling; children: Jamey (John) Taylor and James Kirk Spurling; grandchildren: Jamey Marie Spurling and James Cody Spurling; 4 sisters: Emily (Bobby) Brock, Peggy Sexton, Carol Wright, and Ann (Joe) Cameron; 2 brothers: Jack (Eula) Spurling and Tom (Helen) Spurling; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by parents Joshua Spurling and Beatrice Wallace Spurling and brother Bill Spurling.
