Obituary of Leon Edward Scruggs

Leon Edward Scruggs, age 51, was born on May 21, 1963 in Gallatin, TN to Thomas and Betty Lou Scruggs. He retired from Unipres of Portland after twenty years of service as a quality control manager. Leon was a man who loved music, having played professionally for most of his adult life. In early years, Leon played guitar for Keith Whitley. He later co-wrote the hit songs, "Like Two Sparrows in a Hurricane" for Tanya Tucker and "We Danced Anyway" for Deana Carter. Leon was a founding member of two country bands, "The Lady Luck Band" and "Along For The Ride". He especially loved playing lead guitar in these bands alongside his baby brother, Jerry, who was the drummer. Leon met his wife, Dollie "Vi" while playing music and the two were married on July 28, 2013. They made their home in Portland where he quietly passed away on Tuesday, April 21, 2015, after a long illness. He leaves behind his wife, Dollie "Vi" Murdy Scruggs; two children, Lakesha Scruggs-Lyons of Smiths Grove, KY and Matthew Scruggs of Portland, TN; his father, Thomas Scruggs; two siblings, Gail Choate and husband Kevin of Portland, TN and Jerry Scruggs of Portland, TN. Leon also leaves behind two grandchildren, Velesity Namira Harper and Camren Lyons of Smiths Grove, KY; nephews, Eric Choate (Kristy) of Portland and Trae Choate of Portland. Leon is preceded in death by his mother, Betty Lou Scruggs. He also leaves behind a host of friends, cousins, aunts, uncles and he will be greatly missed. Funeral Service will be Friday, April 24th at 10:00 a.m. from the chapel of Family Heritage Funeral Home with Brother Shane Lane officiating. Interment will follow in Bushs Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, April 23rd from 2:00-8:00 p.m. and Friday, April 24th from 9:00 a.m. until time of service.
