Obituary of Stanley G. Davis

Stanley Gene Davis was born September 27, 1944, in Clay County, Tennessee, the son of the late William Herbert Davis and Lena Biles Davis. He was the next to the youngest of their 11 children. On June 25, 1966, he was married to Mamie Ruth Dawes. To this union was born one son, Troy. Besides his parents, a brother, Glynn Davis, and 2 sisters, Iva Hudson and Lorene Schembri also preceded him in death. On June 5, 1968, he entered the United States Army where he served in Vietnam from November 2, 1968, until October 27, 1969. While serving in the Vietnam War, Stanley received the National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal w/3 Bronze Stars; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; Combat Infantryman Badge; Marksman (Rifle M-14): Marksman (M-60); Marksman (rifle M-16); Expert (105MM). Stanley has related to family and friends the incident of his being a sergeant and serving up front as point man on one particular mission when he became very ill; he was replaced and was sent to the back of the platoon. His replacement was killed in action. His life was spared, and he was given another chance to seek the Lord for salvation of his soul. On June 4, 1970, he received his Honorable Discharge from the military service to his country. After returning home he and Mamie Ruth began attending revivals in our area, and during a revival at Goodwill Missionary Baptist Church he got under conviction and was saved. He later united with Days Cross Roads Missionary Baptist Church where he remained a member. He also enjoyed attending Macon Missionary Baptist Mission….now Church. Stanley attended the Nashville Barber College where he graduated. He received his license, and worked at Paul Kirby's Barber Shop for a couple of years. In 1972, he accepted a position as custodian in the Tri-County EMC Lafayette office. The following year he entered the lineman training program and became a lineman first class in June of 1978. After 16 years of service on the line crew, Stanley became Tri-County's warehouseman and held that position until his retirement nearly 17 years later. As warehouseman he received, stocked and maintained inventories of all operations materials, issued meter bases, performed lighting repairs, assisted crews with job materials collection and managed material deliveries to all district offices and occasionally even gave free haircuts to his co-workers. He took tremendous pride in his work and maintained what was said to be the most organized and cleanest warehouse in the country. On May 9, 2006, Stanley retired from Tri-County exactly 34 years to the day after his career began. After his retirement he and Mamie Ruth enjoyed traveling….going on tours seeing the sites in different areas of the country. He took pride in the appearance of their yard and enjoyed maintaining it, and was always anxious to lend a helping hand to family and friends. He truly looked forward to seeing Troy and his family stop by for a visit. Stanley was truly a GRANDpa. In fact, the same week he was diagnosed with his illness, he learned another grandchild was to be born. It seemed all that he ask for, was to be able to see it. That wish was granted. He was able to enjoy being with her for over 3 months. Stanley is survived by, Wife, Mamie Ruth Dawes Davis, Son, Troy Gene (Ashley) Davis, Grandchildren, Garik Adin Davis and Ava Mae Davis, all of Lafayette, TN, Brothers, Jessie "Jake" (Lou) Davis of Tipton, Indiana, James (Jan) Davis of Sulpher, Oklahoma, William "Woody" (Phyllis) Davis of Lafayette, TN, Sisters, Zelma Tilley of Santa Monica, California, Josephine Hollarman of Kokoma, Indiana, Ann Tutino of Buffalo, New York, and Lucille (Doyle) Smith of Red Boiling Springs, TN. Stanley was a good family man, neighbor, and friend. If he could send us a note today, he would say, "I love all of you so very much," but be happy for me: I am in such a beautiful place, so try to dry that tear, because I am spending Christmas with Jesus this year.
