Obituary of Joyce Jeter Patton

Joyce Jeter Patton, age 79 of Meridian, MS, passed away at Bedford Care Center on Wednesday, April 19, 2017, after several surgeries and hospitalizations. Funeral Service will be Sunday, April 23rd at 2:00 p.m. from the chapel of Family Heritage Funeral Home of Gallatin, TN, with Rev. Malcolm Patton officiating. Interment will follow at Beech Cemetery, with grandsons and family members serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be Saturday, April 22nd from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, April 23rd from 12:00 p.m. until time of service. Joyce Patton was born May 25, 1937 in Columbia, TN, to the late David Jeter and Catherine Gupton Jeter. Her deceased maternal grandparents were Grover and Belle Gupton of Mooresville, TN. She is survived by husband of 57 years, Col. John Perry Patton III, M.D.; sons, John Perry Patton IV (Martha) of Arvada, CO and Joel David Patton (Lora) of Madison, MS; daughter, Penelope Patton McClelland (Dr. Craig) of Rockhill, SC: brother, Donald Carlton Jeter of Lewisburg, TN; and 6 grandchildren. Grandchildren are Anna Patton of Washington, DC, Samuel and Erin Patton of Madison, MS, and Patton, Megan, and Luke McClelland of Rock Hill, SC; and close cousins are, Danaya Angus and Ann Pogue of Columbia, and Linda Gupton of Lewisburg, TN. Joyce graduated from Marshal County High Scool in 1955 and MTSC in 1959 with a teaching degree. She taught elementary classes in Memphis 4 years to support her husband’s medical degree at UT. She was an avid reader and enjoyed years in the Fortnightly Woman’s Reading Club of Meridian. Joyce was a faithful Methodist all of her life and gave sage guidance to her children and grandchildren. She was a loving, giving, supportive Air Force wife for her husband for 20 year military career and 23 year medical practice at Rush Foundation Hospital. May she rest in peace; we will meet again!
