Obituary of Mary JoAnn Bowen

Mary JoAnn Bowen nee Strong

06.05.1938 - 1.22.2018

A life’s Journey

Homer and Ida Strong knew their young daughter JoAnn was a fighter after she won her

battle with rheumatic fever. As an adventurous and spirited adult, she continued to defy

the odds for the next seven decades that followed. She became known for many things

(entrepreneurial spirit, sharp wit, loving heart, being a whiz at cards and Yahtzee!) and was

loved by many throughout her life’s journey.

There are no goodbyes. Wherever you'll be, you'll be in my heart.

- Ghandi

Family

JoAnn was ‘sister’ to Benton Strong, Steve Strong and Faye Welch; and survived by sisters

Jayne Keisler of Malvern, AR and Joyce Sibley of Shreveport, LA. She is also survived by her 6

children, 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Philip Hunt, JoAnn’s first born son lives

in Malvern, AR; his son Charles lives in Los Angeles, CA. JoAnn’s second child, Kevin Hunt,

married Tina and have one daughter Janet and granddaughter Jada in Malvern, AR.

The rest of us who called JoAnn ‘mom’ are (from oldest to youngest) Caroline McGill nee

Shumake, Bob Shumake, Jr., Homer Shumake and Laurel Drews nee Shumake. Caroline

and Tim McGill have selflessly served as mom’s caregivers since 2006, in Antioch, TN.

Caroline's daughter, Amanda McGill currently lives in WY and gave her “Grammy” the joy of

two more great-grandchildren, Bryson and Jareth. Robert and Marlou Shumake live in

Tampa, FL and their daughter, Margret Ann, is attending University of FL nearby. Laurel and

Dieter Drews live in La Conner, WA with their children Max and Eleanor. They love their

“Granny Jo” and as she always said, “but you know that already.”
