Obituary of James E. Maier

James E. Maier, known as “Jim,” passed away peacefully on November 25, 2018, at the age of 66. Jim was born on February 6, 1952, in Dayton, Ohio, the son of David and Marie Maier. He was one of four children.

Jim is preceded in death by parents Dave and Marie Maier and niece Crystal Maier. He is survived by his siblings, Nancy M. Testerman of Nashville, Cindy M. Schwartz (Tom) of Cary, Illinois, and John W. Maier (Judy) of Hermitage, Tennessee along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Jim graduated from Castle Heights Military Academy and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Jim majored in accounting and became a Certified Public Accountant.  He began working for the Knoxville consulting firm FIS Associates, Inc. while still in college.  Jim worked for FIS over 30 years, rising to become its President. In September 1997, he was one of the founders of Meridian Trust & Investment Company. Jim became the Chief Financial Officer of Lawler-Wood, LLC in 2004 and served in this capacity until retirement in 2014.

Jim was an avid golfer and enjoyed spending time with his friends at Holston Hills Country Club. He was, in fact, an excellent golfer, at one time carrying a zero handicap.  He had several holes-in-one but being the humble person he was, never bragged about them. Jim loved to work when he was not playing golf.

He was an influential role model and mentor to scores of professionals at FIS and Lawler-Wood. The men and women Jim mentored remember him as super intelligent.  Many prominent Knoxvillians sought business advice from Jim, including physicians, attorneys and real estate developers. When not golfing or working, Jim enjoyed cards and spectator sports.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at 1:30 pm on Friday, December 28th, at The Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, 711 S Northshore Drive, Knoxville, TN 37919. Reverend Rick Friebel will officiate.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to The Pat Summitt Foundation (520 West Summit Hill Drive, Suite 1101, Knoxville TN 37902) or St. Jude’s Hospital (501 St. Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105, 800.748.5833). Sellars Funeral Home, Lebanon TN, 615.444.9393.
