Obituary of Luther Lenning
Luther Lenning, age 80 of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, passed away on December 9th, 2018. Luther was born on March 26th, 1938 in Hopewell, Tennessee to the late Clyde (Madeline) Lenning and Elizabeth (J.B.) Bingham Whittenberg. He graduated from Mt. Juliet High School in 1956 and went on to become a City of Mt. Juliet Commissioner. Luther served as Mayor of Mt. Juliet from 1987 – 1989, worked at City of Mt. Juliet Public Works, served as a County Commissioner for 4 years, became a tax collector, served 12 years on the MTEMC Board and also served as Constable. In 2017, Luther was surprised with a proclamation in his honor. The City of Mt. Juliet named the bridge on East Division St. after Luther and proclaimed June 12th as “Luther Lenning Day”.
The Funeral Service conducted by Bro. Chuck Groover will be Thursday, December 13th, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Sellars Funeral Home at Mt. Juliet. Interment will follow in Mt. Juliet Memorial Gardens with Vincent Lenning, Chris Lenning, Clayton Mosley, Christopher Lenning, Tim Faulk, T.J. “Jake” Diffenderfer, Johnny Sims, and Ian Bartz serving as pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers: Bob Jernigan, Larry Capps, Jim Goodall, Bart Scott, Joe Lenning, Brad Viall, Dwight Mullins, Robin Johnson, and Mt. Juliet High School Class of 1956. The family will receive friends Wednesday, December 12th from 2:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. and on Thursday, December 13th from 10:00 a.m. until service time.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by daughter, Debbie Lenning; sister, Dot Moore; cousin, Jimmy Lenning. He is survived by loving wife of 50 years, Brenda Lenning; children, Chris (Gwen) Lenning, Lori Lenning, Vincent (Liz) Lenning, and Jenny (Tim) Lenning – Faulk; grandchildren, Christopher Lenning, Jessi Williams, Jami Williams, Kyle Cashion, Chelsee (T.J. “Jake”) Diffenderfer, Clayton Mosley, Crystal (Johnny) Sims, and Christina Lenning; step – grandsons, Jason (Katherine) Nolley and Matt Faulk; step – granddaughter, Ashley Faulk; 8 great – grandchildren also survive.
