Obituary of Lcpl Dillon Case Smalling

Lance Corporal Dillon Case Smalling, age 21 of Portland, TN passed away Sunday, October 14, 2018 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC. Dillon was born February 27, 1997 in Nashville, TN. Lcpl Smalling is survived by his wife, Jessica Smalling of Portland, TN. A daughter, Aubrey Smalling of Portland, TN. His father, Stacy Smalling (Joanie) of Portland, TN. His sister, DJ Garrett (Tony) of Portland, TN. His grandmother, Diane Douglas of Portland, TN. His grandfather, Tony Smalling and great grandfather Tom Smalling both of Adolphus, KY. A nephew, Sage Garrett and a niece, Skylar Garrett. Dillon was a 2015 graduate of Portland High School and married Jessica Butterworth on December 18, 2017. He left for Paris Island on February 1, 2016 and shortly after was a Marine. Dillon was a good problem solver and was full of life day in and day out. He was tough, stubborn, goofy and an all around great person. He was also very selfless, even after passing. He helps our family and through the gift of organ donation, has helped several other families with the gift of life. Funeral services will be held from 2:00 PM Saturday, October 27, 2018 at Gilbert Funeral Home in Portland. Burial will follow at Fairfield Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM Thursday, from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM Friday, and from 9:00 until service time Saturday at Gilbert Funeral Home. Full military honors will be held at the graveside Saturday afternoon. The family has requested in lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the Aubry Smalling Benefit Account at the Farmers Bank, 120 Village Dr. Portland, TN 37148.
