Obituary of Mr. Billy Joe Walters

Mr. Billy Joe Walters, age 83 of Portland, TN., passed away Monday, November 13, 2017 at Sumner Regional Medical Center in Gallatin, TN. Mr. Walters was born January 19, 1934 in Blytheville, AR the son of the late Arley and Helen Walters. Mr. Walters is survived by his wife, Bettie Walters of Portland, TN. Two daughters Terri Lynn Hernandez (Saul) of Houston, TX and Jan Michelle Forman (Rusty) of Dallas, TX. Four sons; Billy Joe Walters Jr. (Petra) of Hendersonville, TN., Mark Allen Walters (Bee) of Chicago, IL., Stephen Reed Walters (Allison) of Mt. Juliet, TN. and Kenneth "Rusty" Walters of Tacoma, WA. A sister, Alvinia Cheatam of Hot Springs, AR. Several half sisters, 11 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild also survive Mr. Walters. Mr. Walters was a member of Boulevard Seventh Day Adventist Church. He was a Shriner, a member of the Goodlettsville, TN Masonic Lodge where he was a 32nd degree Mason. He was a retired Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force and a retired technician for Xerox. Billy was preceded in death by his first wife, Phyllis Morgan Walters and a brother, Tommy Hemphill. Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Thursday, November 16, 2017 at Gilbert Funeral Home in Portland, TN. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM and from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM Wednesday at Gilbert Funeral Home and from 1:00 PM until service time Thursday at Gilbert Funeral Home. The family has chosen cremation following the services on Thursday. Military honors will take place Thursday afternoon at Gilbert Funeral Home. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Boulevard Seventh Day Adventist Church building fund, 261 E Old Hickory Blvd, Madison, TN 37115.
