Obituary of Mary Ruth Phelps

Mary Ruth Phelps, age 89, passed away Wednesday, April 8th, 2015 after a long illness. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 15th at 11am from Covenant Fellowship Church of the Nazarene. Visitation with the family will be held Tuesday, April 14th 4-8pm from Sellars Funeral Home at Mt. Juliet and Wednesday at the church with one hour prior to the service. She was married to the Rev. Stannard E. Phelps in 1946. She was the daughter of the late Rev. Plen Smith and Grace Wilson Smith. Mary graduated from Terre Haute Business College and was a medical secretary of great skill, and also worked for the Tennessean in the 60's and 70's. She and her husband pastored around the country; and were in Alaska during its transition to statehood. In 1966, they started the Mt. Juliet Church of the Nazarene. She attended her last church service there on Easter Sunday. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stannard E. Phelps, and 2 grandchildren, Stannard Phelps III and Angelina Starr Phelps. She is survived by her children, Janette Adamson, John (Michele) Phelps, Stannard Phelps, Jr., Cheryl Myers; siblings, Melvin (Mary) Smith, Norma Jean Murtaugh; 9 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.
