Lonnie McCurry

Obituary of Lonnie Gene McCurry

Lonnie Gene (LG) McCurry passed in peace June 25th, 2020. Preceded in death by parents, Rotha E. McCurry and Louise Harrell McCurry, brother, Hoover McCurry and sister, Eula Gouge (Hoyet). He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Pamela Echols McCurry, sons, Christopher McCurry of Greenville, SC, and Matthew & Kelly Hitt McCurry of Mt. Juliet, TN, and grandson Collin Matthew McCurry, other cherished family members and friends. He was born at home on a farm in the quiet hills of Unicoi, TN, on February 13, 1935. It was here he developed his love for the outdoors. After serving in the United States Army, he went on to graduate from East Tennessee State University with a degree in Mathematics. In 1964, he and his wife moved to Florida where he worked in the Space & Defense industry for 34 years. After a few years, he was able to find a piece of land that would allow him to reconnect to his youth, allowing him to garden, be on a tractor, build, and simply be outside. It was here he taught his sons and others important lessons for life. After retirement, they moved to Chickamauga, GA, where he was involved in his local church, volunteered at a food pantry, and continued his lifelong love affair with the outdoors. Nothing made him happier than planting tomatoes and being on a tractor mowing; this is where he did most of his praying. In 2019, Lonnie and Pam relocated to Mt. Juliet, TN. The land was smaller, but the tomatoes still grew. The loss of our beloved Husband, Father and Poppa to Covid-19 has changed our lives forever. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Mt. Juliet Help Center, a local food pantry and community non-profit organization. http://www.mtjuliethelpcenter.org/ Services will be private at the family’s request due to the current Covid-19 situation.
