Obituary of Susie Jane Newton Garrott

Susie Jane “Sue” Newton Garrott, age 80 of Gallatin, passed away Monday, November 12, 2018.  Celebration of Life Service will be Friday, November 16th at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Gallatin, 167 West Main Street.  Visitation will be Thursday, November 15th from 3:00-7:00 p.m. at Alexander Family Heritage Funeral Home, 100 Albert Gallatin Avenue and Friday, November 16th from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. at the church.  Private interment will be at the Gallatin Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to First Presbyterian Church, 167 West Main Street, Gallatin, TN  37066.

Mrs. Garrott was born April 27, 1938 in Hammond, LA to the late Autley Benjamin Newton, Sr. and Vivian James Caruthers Newton.  In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by husband, Joseph Thomas Garrott; and sister, Vivian “Maya” Levy.  She is survived by daughters, Susie Driver (Dan) of Gallatin, Elizabeth Powell (Don) of Germantown, and Alison Turner (Marty) of Gallatin; brother, Autley B. Newton (Kathy) of Hammond, LA; step-brother, Jack Newton (Boo) of Woodland Hills, CA; 9 grandchildren, Sara Jane DiLeo (Joseph), Jonathan Driver, Hannah Driver, Thomas Powell (Erin), Will Powell (Madison), Abby Powell, Gareth Turner, Ellary Turner, and Henry Turner; and 1 great grandchild, Hayden Powell. 

Mrs. Garrott was a lifelong learner.  She started her education at Trinity College in Texas in 1956 where she met her husband, Tommy Garrott, at the Presbyterian Church in San Antonio.  They moved to Gallatin and she served on PTAs, Girl Scouts and several community clubs.  Mrs. Garrott completed her BS and Masters Degrees at Western Kentucky Univ. in the early 1980’s.  Mrs. Garrott was a supporter of the arts and held season tickets to the Nashville Symphony and TPAC for many years and lovingly played her piano at home.  She embraced technology and was an early owner of a computer.  She loved her family and showed it by cooking wonderful meals, sewing everything from baby clothes to prom dresses and encouraging each of them in all of their activities and aspirations.  Mrs. Garrott had a deep love for First Presbyterian Church in Gallatin and it’s members and was an active member for many years. 

Her family would like to thank those who cared for her and visited her at the Gallatin Center for Rehabilitation and Healing for so many years.
