A Tribute to Wayne Bogle
The Shade Tree Mechanic
Growing up with your Dad as a shade tree mechanic meant you needed to know how to
rummage through a rusty box of greasy tools. To know the difference between a ½” and
9/16” wrench, and wondering in the heck do they make ‘metric’ anyway. To wonder to
yourself, “why aren’t these things organized, do I really have to be here, I just want to
ride my bike and shoot my BB gun”.
Growing up with your Dad as a shade tree mechanic meant early Saturday mornings
searching the junkyards for a single part, and stopping for a coke and peanuts. It meant
you were the one designated to carry that same box of greasy tools, although it weighed
half as much as you do. To get all the way back home and figure out it was the wrong
part anyway. “Don’t that just beat all!”
Growing up with your Dad as a shade tree mechanic meant seeing family and friends
bring their broken cars to our house and in no time, they’d be back on the road. It meant
traveling the interstate on a family vacation, playing the guessing game, “What year,
make, and model is that car?” It was also waiting in the car for Daddy to help a stranger
jump start their car and seeing him refuse any type of repayment.
Growing up with your Dad as a shade tree mechanic meant learning other things like,
Knowing how to make “GoJoe” out of kerosene and dishwashing liquid.
Seeing Dad strap a V8 engine to a wooden pallet, and watching him it fire up.
The family favorite magazine was a weekly “Wheels&Deals” book.
A carburetor on the kitchen table and hearing Ma ask, “how much was that thing?”
Dad tossing us boys the keys to a 78 ford fiesta and learning how to drive a stick shift.
Seeing a Chevelle drive-by would turn Dad’s head faster than a woman in a bikini.
Seeing Ma dress up Dad one Halloween as 5 foot nine, 150 pound Hulk
(Dad looked like a skinny Magnum PI and Bruce Banner squeezed into One!)
Our dog Klondike breaking his chain loose, Dad grabbed the chain and the dog almost
snatched him off his feet. (Not sure which one was the Hulk there, Dad or the dog!)
Feeling Dad’s wrath when we shot his 55 gal kerosene drum full of BB holes.
The best thing about Growing up with your Dad as a shade tree mechanic was that
if we ever wanted to quit, hearing Dad say, “Son if it was easy, anybody could do it”
To give Pop a send-off in HOT ROD style, this Super Sport Nova is gonna rock the floor
of heaven, so you might wanna plug your ears!!! We Love you Pop… Randall & Shane.
I love you Uncle Wayne, I have so many fond memories of you and Aunt Linda, Lord watch over this family bring peace and comfort to them. We never want to let them go but I know my Uncle Wayne is at peace he's with Jesus and he's in no more pain. He will see his family again until then watch over them and give them peace in Jesus name amen.
